Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo after reaching an agreement for the Uruguay international to move to Anfield on a season-long loan.

The 27-year-old is expected to undergo his medical before completing the transfer, bringing an end, at least temporarily, to his long spell with Barcelona.

The deal represents a significant defensive addition for Liverpool, who have moved to strengthen their options at centre-back ahead of the new Premier League season.

Under the agreement, Liverpool will cover Araujo’s salary during his loan spell and will have the option to make the transfer permanent for €55million, around £47m.
