Group H is the tournament favourites’ group. Spain, the reigning European champions and joint favourites to win the World Cup face a two-time world champion Uruguay, the Saudi Arabia side that famously beat Argentina in 2022, and Cape Verde, making their very first World Cup appearance. This is not as straightforward as the rankings suggest.

The Teams

Spain

Reigning European champions. Spain are the tournament favourites at +475. Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Rodri, Oyarzabal, Nico Williams, the most technically complete squad in world football. They should win this group comfortably. The only variable is whether Yamal is fully fit after his late-season hamstring issue.

Uruguay

Two-time world champions under Marcelo Bielsa. One of the most defensively disciplined sides in the tournament. Valverde and Ugarte form a midfield double pivot that covers every blade of grass. Darwin Nunez leads the attack. Uruguay will not come to Group H to make up numbers, they expect to qualify and they have the squad quality to do exactly that.

Saudi Arabia

The team that shocked the world by beating Argentina in 2022. Their organised pressing system and tactical discipline can create problems for any opponent on a good day. Group H against Spain and Uruguay is enormously challenging, but Saudi Arabia know how to upset the odds and their players will be fully motivated for the occasion.

Cape Verde

Making their first ever World Cup appearance after beating Cameroon in qualifying. A technically proficient squad shaped by Portuguese football heritage. Group H is the steepest possible debut, Spain and Uruguay in the same group but Cape Verde approach this with nothing to fear and everything to gain.

Match Predictions

Matchday 1

Spain vs Cape Verde — Spain 4-0 Cape Verde. Spain’s opening statement to the tournament. Yamal torments Cape Verde’s right back throughout. Oyarzabal scores twice. Williams adds one. Cape Verde defend bravely but are simply outclassed technically.

Uruguay vs Saudi Arabia — Uruguay 1-0 Saudi Arabia. A tight, physical match. Saudi Arabia press high and create problems for Uruguay’s build-up but Bielsa’s defensive organisation holds firm. Darwin Nunez wins it late with a header from a set piece.

Matchday 2

Spain vs Uruguay — Spain 2-1 Uruguay. The best game of the group. Uruguay make Spain uncomfortable with their pressing intensity and Valverde’s midfield dominance. Spain’s possession system eventually wears them down. Pedri’s through ball creates the decisive second goal. Uruguay score late but cannot find the equaliser.

Saudi Arabia vs Cape Verde — Saudi Arabia 2-1 Cape Verde. Cape Verde’s finest hour. They go ahead early and stun Saudi Arabia. But Saudi Arabia’s greater experience eventually tells and they fight back to win in a thrilling contest. Cape Verde leave having shown why their qualification was no fluke.

Matchday 3

Spain vs Saudi Arabia — Spain 3-0 Saudi Arabia. Spain rotate slightly with qualification secured but their quality still overpowers Saudi Arabia completely. Dani Olmo impresses from the start. Yamal scores his first World Cup goal.

Uruguay vs Cape Verde — Uruguay 2-0 Cape Verde. Uruguay confirm second place with a professional, controlled performance. Cape Verde defend with everything they have but Uruguay’s quality in the final third is too much.

Predicted Final Standings

Who Advances

Spain advance as group winners with a perfect record, Yamal having announced himself to the tournament with his first World Cup goal. Uruguay advance in second place, their defensive solidity and Bielsa’s tactical intelligence carrying them through. Saudi Arabia exit having beaten Cape Verde but unable to compete with the top two. Cape Verde go home as heroes who scored in their first ever World Cup game.

The Key Match

Spain vs Uruguay on Matchday 2 is the group decider. A Spain win sends both teams through regardless of other results. A Uruguay win would completely reshape the group. Rodri vs Valverde in midfield is one of the best individual battles at the entire group stage. This is the game that Bielsa will have spent months preparing for.
